Typography Kenya 2018 is a celebration of African typography and visual communication that has evolved over the centuries. The conference is a opportunity for design students, professionals and stakeholders to interact, interrogate and appreciate contemporary Kenyan typography and visual communication. This encompasses text, signs, symbols, icons and colour as applied in various mediums (example Digital, TV, publishing, packaging and corporate identity). The aim is to highlight innovations and applications of typography in various sectors such as manufacturing, health, agriculture, housing, media, textiles and the public.

The conference is one of the activities in the calendar of events for Design Kenya Society (DKS) that is a not for profit society of designers. Previous events include Nairobi International Design Conference (NIDEC) 2011 and 2017. DKS is a founder member of Network of Afrika Designers and Afrika Design Forum that are committed to the growth of professional designers in the continent.

Introduction:

Typography is the foundation on which graphic design and by extension the written word is developed. The demand for high quality visuals for communication in Advertising, Branding, Packaging, Publishing, Signage design, Web Design and the development in virtual space has challenged designers to be more innovative with type. This Conference will provide designers and artists with a platform where they can appreciate contemporary typography and reflect on their own journey towards advancing innovation in typography as a visual communication tool.

Themes:

The following themes will inform the content and context of the conference papers to be presented in the paper session of the proceedings.

The overall theme is: Typography Innovations in Kenya

The possible sub themes for papers include:

  • Quality visuals for communication
  • Communication in Advertising
  • Delivering the Brand through design
  • Language of Packaging to consumers
  • Publishing the message package
  • Signage design, effectiveness without clutter
  • Web Design and the development in virtual space

Submission format:

  • Background: where did the issue emanate from; maximum four sentences
  • Problem: manifestation of the problem and who is affected; maximum three sentences
  • Objective: what specifically you expect to do to the problem; one sentence
  • Design: what methodological approach will you take to probe the issue; two sentences
  • Setting: where the study was undertaken; one sentence
  • Subjects: who were interviewed; one sentence
  • Results: expected outcomes of the study; two sentences
  • Conclusion: concrete implications and way forward; two sentences

After receiving your abstract, the editorial board will evaluate for suitability to the theme of the conference. If your abstract is found appropriate, you will be invited to present a final full paper. The paper will thereafter be subjected to blind peer review. Once you make the necessary changes if any, you will be scheduled to present your paper in the paper session of the conference.

Fashion Show

This encompasses text, signs, symbols, icons and colour as applied in various mediums (example Digital, TV, publishing, packaging and corporate identity). The aim is to highlight innovations and applications of typography in various sectors such as manufacturing, health, agriculture, housing, media, textiles and the public.

In view of this we send an invitation to fashion and design students to participate in a fashion showcase based around the conference theme: Typography Innovations in Kenya. Participants will submit a maximum of two pieces for assessment using any media that is representative of typography and incorporates the key elements of typography into the designs.

Entry is on a first come, first served basis as spaces are limited.
