When was the last time you just sat outside with colleagues in the sun absorbing the warmth and strength from it? When was the last time you sat with a senior designer and asked all the questions you want to be answered? When was the last time you sat with an upcoming designer and provided the insight you always wished you knew?

The reality is that we don’t spend as much time with others as we should.

Did I just say we should? Absolutely! Remember the concept that we get ahead based on our networks? That is why we need to network. the conventional form of networking is going to events and sharing business cards hoping that someone will remember you and call with work but that doesn’t work well anymore.

A lot of the networking we do is so that we can get work and expand our brand recognition, and there is nothing wrong with that but it is too little to pursue. Yes we need to eat, yet we need to grow; yes we need new opportunities but could there be more to this? Could it be that growing one’s brand and experience has to be about so much more than just making money in the future?

One of the best ways to network is to attend conferences. I have watched a few of the reputable names in the industry and they did a few different things that I want to share when attending conferences;

  1. Register, attend and participate in conferences as a delegate, presenter, panellist or even paper presenter. Make efforts to attend conferences outside your locality and country.
  2. Plan what you want to do when you get there and who you must meet. Set goals for the lessons you want to learn and the kinds of opportunities you are looking to see.
  3. Listen, listen, listen and listen some more then ask questions. No questions are foolish if thought through, so just ask, ask, ask.
  4. Question every presenter and everything you know then see how what you are learning applies to your situation
  5. Take copious notes for review. I know many of us don’t write much but you could take notes in the form of tweets and other online content, take videos of the speaker and discussions or even follow other presenting online content, like and share.
  6. Attend a workshop that isn’t in your discipline. It will expand your mind as you learn something new. In time you will see new perspectives
  7. If you meet someone at the conference who you want to get to know more, send a thank you note for their time and express the interest to take the discussions further
  8. Visit exhibitions and other advertising spaces and ask as many questions as possible. This expands your mind and opens you up to all the possibilities

At the end of the day, it is daily steps and daily effort to reach the goal and it is entirely possible. Consistent practise of the said principle leads to greater and faster grown than you ever had.

Off we go to design our world!!
